pnum — Proportional Figures
pnum (Proportional Figures) replaces tabular-width figures with proportional-width forms. Tabular width is often the default in the absence of this feature, and it is not used in monospaced designs.
The specification’s example is using it to get even spacing for lining figures used as dates in an all-capital headline.
The counterpart in the figure-width axis is tnum (Tabular Figures). The specification states that pnum overrides the results of tnum. The figure-style axis (lnum and onum) is independent of this, and pnum can apply to either lining or oldstyle figures.
Example
Section titled “Example”Vollkorn’s default figures are already oldstyle and proportional, so applying pnum produces no visible change. This example uses EB Garamond instead.
